ABOUT MUTUASHI: The Mutuashi dance originates from the Luba people who reside in the Kasai region of DR Congo. Mutuashi is a popular title that was given by outsiders as they did not how to properly pronouce the word “Mutuas”, which is shouted during the dance and calls for a challenge. The dance main feature are the hips which can be suggestive or not depending on the intent of the dancer. This dance calls for skills, agility, and self-expression.

INSTRUCTOR: Fumu Jahmez is a performing an artist – dancer, singer, poet, writer. Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, this multi-talented individual strives to create, unite and inspire. He arrived in Canada at the age of 4 where he demonstrated a passion for the arts with a strong focus on dance. He has worked with a variety of artists and dance companies including Jaivah Nouvel Exposé, Subliminal, Waleed Abdulhamid, CanaAfric Theatre, Akwaba, Ngoma Ensemble and more. He has taught for Durocher community centre in Quebec City, Maritime Centre for African Dance and is presently teaching for danceImmersion. Fumu is currently an apprentice performer with COBA (Collective of Black artists).
